And so we’re clear Google wants us to believe they are clever enough to spot linking schemes, and text links that have been paid for, but aren’t smart enough to figure out pages with the same meta data may actually have different internal content...

Drum roll.... Real content will (eventually) win the search battle - any 'engine' out there will eventurally have to figure out how to always provide contextually relevant results or their users will find a new tool. In the mean time SEO strategies and semantic design/coding are vital to 'getting found'...

Google has enough resources where although I'm sure they will continue to work on their algo, the only way to guarantee better results is human reviewers. I'm sure their human SPAM reviewing department has grown significantly in size. They have billions of dollars. They could greatly improve relvancy by hiring a few thousand people in India (current cheap labor market for tech companies) to constantly review results for the top 10,000 or 100,000 keywords. This would REALLY make their results very high quality, at least for those keywords.

I really don't know why Google would penalize blogs. Democratic content is a great contributor to relevant search content. Even when blogs are used to promote or recommend products, The information is useful, interesting and still more unbiased than commercial web sites. I think people are savvy enough to take blog content at face value and make good decisions on their own. Even if bloggers are compensated for their articles, they are not going to compromise their credibility by becoming advocates for products they don't believe in.

I remember doing some SEO work for a company during a algorithm update period, and their rank dropped significantly before I had even been able to help them. They've never really seemed to work out well for me, and many are starting to predict that Google are going to start penalising Blog's a lot more now. Perhaps this is just the eye of the storm?
