Upcoming Social Media Conference

Northern Voice 2010 is getting underway in Vancouver, BC this weekend. It’s a conference put on by the local tech community focusing on social media and blogging. There’s a wide range of topics, from Wikifying the CBC: Social software at CBC Radio 3 (crowdsourcing the creation of content) to Finding Your Online Voice (defining you and your brand online). Tickets are sold out if you are interested in attending, though I did see a few floating around on Twitter in the last few days. If you are interested in getting an idea of what the conference is about, a number [...]

Twitter Announces Sponsored Tweets Platform

Today Twitter released it’s Sponsored Tweets advertising program. In a nutshell, it gives advertisers the ability to move their tweets up in the timeline. As the New York Times article says: Starbucks, for instance, often publishes Twitter posts about its promotions, like free pastries. But the messages quickly get lost in the thousands of posts from users who happen to mention meeting at Starbucks. AdAge posted an example of an @Starbucks promoted tweet. To begin with, the ads are being offered on a keyword focused CPM basis. There is a maximum of one sponsored Tweet will be shown on a [...]

5 Tools For Monitoring Social Media

If your company has been delving deeper into social media over the past couple of years, you are most likely using some social media monitoring tools and your analytics to track the progress of your social media campaigns.  I’ve mentioned social media maturity models in previous posts at Marketing Jive, so it is not like social media is a new concept or anything.  Like a lot of the new media in the digital age, there are early adopters and then the folks who are a bit slower to adopt new technologies and avenues for reaching their audience.  In fact,  there are [...]

Google and Social Search

Yesterday, I blogged about a great webinar in my post B2B Social Best Practices in the Marketing Cloud, where the discussion centered saround B2B companies and social media strategies.  Everyone keeps saying that 2010 is the year for social.  The fact is that some organizations have been developing social strategies for years.  Social is not new, but it is a hot topic for many B2B companies as they are shuffling budget over to develop social strategies.  Yesterday, Google also rolled out something that they first mentioned back in Octrober and that is Google Social Search.  The reasoning behind this?  Well Google understands [...]

Visit Enquiro On Facebook

Funny story. I was working on some promotional material for our webinar on “What would happen if your turned off PPC advertising for a month?” and I figured that it would be a good idea to add a link onto the Enquiro Facebook Page. SURPRISE! We didn’t have one. We had pretty much every other Facebook profile possible except a fan page. So, finally it is my honor to give you. The official Enquiro Facebook Fan Page – http://www.facebook.com/enquiro.

Print Media to Digital Media – Much Change in a Decade or Two?

Many years ago, in what feels like another life, I used to work in print media. For 16 years, in fact. Not even on the hi-tech print production side of things, I was on the inky oily world of logistics, circulation, distribution, and business administration. Oh how I miss that. Not. Recent tumultuous challenges and strategic planning sessions brought something to mind. Business is just business, and digital media, however much it’s changing and how quickly, is just media, just business. Complex, fast moving, and difficult to keep a hold of the pulse of things? Sure.  More challenging than ever. But [...]

Web 3.0 – been there, done that?

As I projected myself into the brave new Web 3.0 future, it started to feel like something I’d experienced before. And that something was CompuServe.

The New Speed of Information

This summer, we had fires in the town I live in. From the back deck of my house, I could see the smoke and, as darkness descended, the flames that were threatening the homes in the hills above Kelowna. I had friends and co-workers that lived in the neighborhoods that were being evacuated, so I wanted to know what was happening as soon as possible. I was sitting on the back deck, watching the progress of the fire through binoculars and monitoring Twitter on my laptop. My wife was inside the house, listening on the radio and watching on TV. [...]

News Flash – People Tweet about Pointless Babble

A rush of emails flew around the office this morning about Emarketer’s post claiming 40% of Tweets are babble. Not just babble but “pointless babble”.  At the time I wondered what babble with a point might look like. But let’s get past that mindblock. I find it really interesting. The “pointless babble” is just random stuff that people shout out in the course of their daily life. An SEO expert might provide heaps of useful insight, flagging up useful links and helping their Twitter community with stucks and problems. Yet they may also shout out that their cat was just [...]

Skittles Viral Campaign Holds a Mirror to Twitter

Original Post: http://www.marketingfinger.com/2009/03/skittles-holds-a-mirror-to-twitter/ Skittles, a candy produced by Mars Incorporated, created a bit of an online uproar on March 1 when they made a dead simple, yet effective change to their web home page, www.skittles.com. Instead of a rainbow-colored product site as one would expect, users saw a Twitter feed for the search term Skittles.  The page was superimposed by an intercept survey asking users for their age, and acceptance of a simple terms and conditions statement: "Just a heads up: Any stuff beyond the Skittles.com page is actually another site and not in our control.  This panel may be [...]
