As I write this, thousands of us search marketing folks around the globe are packing our bags and getting ready to swoop into San Jose, California for the largest search engine strategies conference of the year, known by the industry simply as SES San Jose. Our company has been a part of these conferences for some time, but each show is a mixture of old and new. And for many of you who may be attending SES San Jose for the first time, here is something you may just want to bookmark and read during some downtime in the airport: [...]

The Facebook Landrush – Vanity URL Gold

As I write this there’s an automated countdown clock in another browser window counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until millions of people will flood the internet in search of the perfect Facebook username. On June 12th at 12:01 a.m.  EDT Facebook will go crazy. Everyone who was previously assigned a user name made up of random numbers (id=123456789) will be able to obtain a username similar to what LinkedIn offers. (Official announcement here) I can now shed my previous Facebook identity (120400011) become facebook.com/chris.davies, or if that’s not available perhaps w.chris.davies to match my LinkedIn account. [...]

Banner Ads on YouTube – 1990 Style

YouTube’s been experimenting with a variety of advertising models. In-video overlays, promoted videos, traditional blocks of adsense….they’ve been testing all sorts of things in the hope of monetizing the most popular video search engine on the planet. Today it seems we’re going back to the 90′s with a large banner across the top of the homepage. This screenshot was taken on a Canadian IP address without being logged in to YouTube. (For readers outside of Canada, Rogers is a telecom company which just released the Android phones in Canada. They’re also the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in Canada)   And when [...]

Why Would Google Acquire Twitter?

It’s possibly one of the fastest moving rumors on the internet (perhaps thanks to Twitter): TechCrunch has reported Google may be in talks to acquire Twitter. Whether it’s just a rumour, or the talks are fairly advanced, it’s worthwhile to take a step back and examine why Google might want to buy a service like Twitter, and what that might mean to either company. Google Can Do Anything, Why Can’t It Make A Twitter? Google knows what it’s good at. Like any smart company, they focus on what they’re good at and strategically outsource the rest. They also know that [...]

Writing and Promoting White Papers – an interview with Michael Stelzner

Michael Stelzner is one of the leading authorities on the topic of writing and marketing white papers. He has written more than 130 white papers for many of the world’s most recognized companies, including Microsoft, Dow Jones, FedEx, Motorola, Monster, Hewlett-Packard and SAP. In this 17 minute interview, you’ll hear me ask Michael about white paper promotion from a b2b marketing perspective, including: What prompted the book Writing White Papers?   Which promotional channels work best for white papers?   What is the life span of a white paper?   Should companies charge for white papers?   What about [...]

Dot-Com is so 20th Century

Will the dot-com go the way of the Dodo in the light of ICANN’s decision to open up top-level domain names? Not likely, but it would be entertaining to own ".enquiro".   FYI, there are currently 21 top level domains (TLDs) that we’re all used to seeing, including .com, .ca, .gov and .edu. Important highlights of the ICANN decision: Applications will be accepted starting in April 2009 and likely cost ~$100,000 to register to help offset ICANN’s cost   Top level domains will be available in non-Latin languages such as Arabic and Cyrillic   Applicants must “demonstrate their technical capability [...]

Google Launches Google Ad Planner

Google has been on a roll with some major announcements in the past week.  First there was the announcement of the addition of the new layer to Google Trends with Google Trends for Websites, a fun tool that gives you a view of how popular your favorite websites are, including your own! It also compares and ranks site visitation across geographies, and related websites and searches. Now today there was an announcement about Google Ad Planner, a "research and media planning tool that connects advertisers and publishers."  Basically how Ad Planner works is that it lets users enter their demographics [...]

Google Adwords Phishing Attempts

A word of Caution to Adwords Advertisers: Recently, we have seen a notable increase in the number of what appears to be phishing (A.K.A spoofing) attempts targeting Google Adwords Accounts. These attempts mirror the same strategy that was used to steal account information from bank accounts; where the email appears to be from Google Adwords, yet the URL is a different variation to the Google Adwords link. Google does attempt to contact you through emails; however, should you receive an email alert, please look into your account through the user interface directly. A valid email from Google will include [...]

Search Marketing Trends 2008

Last week I was able to catch up with Jeffrey Pruitt, EVP, Corporate Partnerships at iCrossing, to discuss his thoughts on search marketing trends and paradigm shifts in 2008. We also discussed some useful sessions people should check out while attending Search Engine Strategies in New York. Here’s how our conversation went: [Manoj]: Can you give me a brief overview of the trends you think the search marketing industry will see this year? [Jeffrey Pruitt]: 1) Convergence of Search and Display As advertising becomes more and more digitized, we will see a changed landscape over the next few years. Non-Premium [...]
