This is great general advice, but it is hard to extend this to specific uses of Google Alerts for reputation management without examples. I recent wrote a blog post on using Google Alerts to monitor the reputation of a brand that makes a useful case study:

At least now business will be able to refute the occasional outlandish claims that come up. It is going to take some level heads though. I know I have a problem when people bad mouth my business. I instantly refute all claims in an arrogant. Also check out AirCheese. Its a really good tool for oRM its beta version is available for free.

When you set up Google Alerts, the emails are sent to the person who set up the alerts… If the alerts are forwarded to others, they should be able to get to your website through the alert providing that there is a link in the specific alert.
